History of the islands of the Maldives

Early History

The first settlers to reach the tiny islands were from present day Sri Lanka and India in the 5th centry BC. In the next couple hundred years the islands were mostly Budist. But in the 11 hundreds the king adopted islam and that has been the main religon ever since. In the 1300 the first formings of a dictatorship were begining to form with a travaler who would whip people for not going to friday prayers.

A lot of Leadership

The next couple of years swam by(no pun intended) and not much else happened until the sultan from Sri Lanka decided to take over the Maldives for the good part of 5 centeries. Until the portugese came in and took over for 15 years before Mohammed Thakurufaan drove them out. He is widley considered to be the Maldives greatest national hero. After that Mohammed Thakurufaan estableshed an empirer that lasted around 150 years.

Recent Times

The next couple years were worry free but then Malabar sent a raid to attack the Maldives. After a long battle the Madives were able to defend their land but not without a cost. The dynisty that ruled over Maldives for almost two centries calapsed. What prevailed was a struggle for powwer witch the Huaage dynisty won. The Maldives were a colony for the british for a long time but 1976 the British troops left the buitiful beaches. With this transition came a transition in goverment. For the first time in over ten centeries the Maldives were now a republic.
